A Morning Family Session in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Some sessions just feel like Carmel.
This one started in the heart of the village, where the light comes up soft over the storybook cottages and striped awnings — and where a baby riding on dad’s shoulders is pretty much guaranteed to charm every shop owner setting up for the day. We wandered the quiet streets while the town was still waking up, and honestly, that’s my favorite version of Carmel-by-the-Sea: no crowds, warm morning sun, and room for a family to just be.

Why I love morning sessions in Carmel
Everyone asks me about sunset sessions, but morning light on the Monterey coast is the best-kept secret in family photography. The village is empty, the light is every bit as golden, and — this is the big one if you have a baby or toddler — you’re working with nap schedules instead of against them. This little guy was fresh, fed, and full of smiles at 8 a.m. That’s not luck; that’s scheduling.

From the village to the sand
After the village, we made the short hop down to Carmel Beach, and the whole session shifted into barefoot mode. Baby on shoulders, wind in mom’s hair, that white Carmel sand glowing in the sun. Some of my favorite frames from this session are the in-between moments — mom and dad laughing nose to nose while their son grabs a fistful of dad’s hair, and a quiet black-and-white of both parents kissing his cheeks at once.

That’s the whole philosophy behind how I shoot: natural, timeless, unscripted. No stiff posing — just prompts that get families laughing, snuggling, and moving, while I catch what’s real.

What they wore (and why it worked)
This family nailed the palette: creams, warm whites, and earthy browns. Mom’s flowy white dress moved beautifully in the beach breeze, dad kept it simple in a linen button-up, and baby matched in a tiny neutral set. Soft, coordinated neutrals photograph beautifully against both the village architecture and the sand — if you’re planning your own session, that combination is hard to beat.

Thinking about a Carmel family session?
If you’ve been wanting family photos that feel like you — with the village, the beach, or both — I’d love to make it happen. Sessions include location planning, outfit guidance, and a full gallery of edited images. I photograph families across Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and the whole Monterey coast.
