Sometimes a session ends up exactly where it was supposed to be. These Natural Bridges family photos almost didn’t happen here at all.

This family was in town on vacation, and we had a completely different location planned. Then the Big Sur fires happened and we had to move. I hate that part for them, because that stretch of coast is unreal and it was the whole reason they picked it. So we regrouped, moved everything up to Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz, and I don’t think it could have gone better.

We met on a gray misty morning. Not the postcard version of Santa Cruz. Fog sitting low over the water, everything soft and silvery, the arch barely holding its edges. The kind of morning that makes people text me the night before asking if we should reschedule.

We did not reschedule. Look what we got.

They got in the water in about four minutes

Nobody asked if they could. There was no hovering, no “careful, don’t get your shorts wet.” One of the boys just went, and then everybody went, and that was the tone for the rest of the morning.

That’s my favorite kind of session. At that point I’m not really posing anybody, I’m just following. Mom and Dad ended up holding hands out in the shallows while both boys did their own thing off to the side, one of them dragging a stick through the sand like it was the whole point of the trip. Which, if you’re ten, it kind of is.

I love this family so much. They were easy and warm from the first minute, and you can see it in every frame. Nothing in this gallery is anybody performing for me.

What a foggy morning actually does for beach photos

If you’re planning a Santa Cruz beach session, especially while you’re visiting, this is the part I want you to know. The weather here changes fast and it doesn’t care about your plan. We get thick marine layer mornings in July. We get clear golden ones in December. Sometimes the fog burns off at 9:15 and sometimes it sits all day.

So every coastal session looks and feels a little different, and that’s the good part. Fog gives you soft even light with nobody squinting and no harsh shadows falling across a face. Overcast makes the colors quieter and moodier, which I love. And at low tide the wet sand turns into a mirror, which is where all those reflection frames came from.

You get the day you get, and you go play in it anyway.

Why Natural Bridges is such a good spot for family photos

Natural Bridges State Beach is one of my favorite places in Santa Cruz for exactly this reason. Parking is right there, so nobody’s hiking a tired kid down a cliff. The arch gives you a landmark that says Santa Cruz the second anyone looks at the photo. And if the tide is low, you get all that flat glassy sand to walk on.

Mornings here are usually calmer than evenings, both in crowds and in wind. There’s a day use parking fee at the main lot, and I always check the tide chart before we lock in a time.

If you’re visiting and you only have one open morning on the whole trip, don’t let a gray sky talk you out of it. Come anyway. Get in the water.
