There’s a particular kind of light at Lovers Point in the first hour after sunrise — soft, warm, a little windswept, and almost entirely to ourselves — and it makes senior portraits feel less like a photo shoot and more like the opening scene of whatever comes next. That’s exactly the light we chased for Bella’s session, tucked into the rocks and tide pools at Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove.

Yes, it means an early alarm. But a sunrise session on the Monterey coast is worth every yawn: the beach is quiet, the crowds haven’t arrived, and the light comes up gold over the water instead of blowing out behind you.

Senior year moves fast. One minute they’re picking a first-day outfit, and the next they’re standing on a beach in a cap and gown, somehow both eighteen and five years old at the same time. My whole goal with a senior session is to slow that moment down — to make something you’ll actually want on the wall, not just in a folder on your phone.

I love photographing seniors at Lovers Point for the same reason I love it for families: it gives us range without ever leaving one stretch of sand. Dramatic rocks for the bold, editorial shots. Open water for the dreamy, flowy ones. Soft sunrise backlight for the relaxed, laughing-in-your-jeans frames. We can move from “senior banner” to “frame this forever” in about fifteen steps down the beach. And the breeze — there’s almost always a breeze on our coast, and for seniors it’s honestly a gift. It moves the hair, it moves the dress, it keeps everything from looking stiff and posed. We just lean into it.

The outfits that made this session sing

Bella brought a lineup that covered every side of who she is, and it’s a great blueprint if you’re planning your own session:

The cap and gown. This is the one the grandparents want, and for good reason. We styled the gown open over a simple white dress so it read celebratory but still her — not just a formal document photo. Leaning into the rocks with the cove behind her, it felt earned.

The letterman jacket. If your senior has a varsity jacket, bring it. Bella’s “Class of 2026” patch and the name on the chest tell the whole story without a single word, and the navy-and-white against the coastline is a color match made in heaven.

Something flowy. The long blue dress in the surf was the showstopper — the kind of frame that looks like it belongs in a magazine. When the fabric catches the wind and the sunrise flares behind, that’s the shot you didn’t know you needed.

Something that’s just them. We closed with jeans and a simple white top, barefoot in the sand with the early sun coming up over the water. No cap, no jacket, no ceremony — just eighteen and free and about to take on the world. Those often end up being everyone’s favorites.

We also worked in a personal keepsake — Bella’s Bible and a small bouquet of wildflowers — because the details that mean something to your senior are the details that make the gallery feel like theirs.

Planning your own Pacific Grove senior session

A few things I always tell my seniors: bring more outfits than you think you need (we can always edit down), pick pieces in colors that live near each other so the whole gallery feels like it was poured from the same sunset, and don’t stress about the “perfect” pose.
